Teaching

Since 1995 Marcus Weiss is professor for saxophone and chamber music at the University of Music Basel, Switzerland (Hochschule fuer Musik Basel). The saxophone studio offers a Bachelor program (3 years) as well as a Master in Performance and a Master in Pedagogy (both 2 years). Possible “minor” in the advanced program of contemporary music is a very interesting extension of the studies in performance.

The main goal of studies is to develop an independent personality – the ability to find one’s own way into the “music world.” The path of a “classical saxophonist” is not predetermined, as is the case for most classical instrumentalists. A saxophonist must create their own profile, and in addition to developing strong instrumental and musical abilities, many personal choices need to be made, demanding an open, critical and well-informed mind. Special concentration on the study of older musical styles and the new music of today helps to deepen this perspective, this horizon.
